Letter from Director of Swimming - Mark Bottrill...

May 27, 2009

To: all interested swimmers/families in the PE/Youth/Senior Group currently not at early practice

Re: 2009-2010 2:30-5:30 early group practice (Monday/Wednesday/Friday)

I would like to notify all interested swimmers that we are currently accepting applications to the early group practices for next season. With an unprecedented graduation rate from Grade 12 this season we have openings in this group for next season.

As such I am extended an invite to all current Hyack swimmers in the mentioned groups who wish to be a part of this high performance training group. Applicants will be reviewed and accepted on the following conditions:

1. Performance and attendance in their present group
2. Work habits and attitude in their present group
3. Commitment to the meet and training camp calendar for the entire year as set forth by the Director of Swimming

It is critical that any interested swimmer have their schooling organized to attend this group. For swimmers in the New Westminster school district we have the Recognized Athlete Program at NWSS which has provided very good service to the current NWSS students in the group. For the Tricity area students there is a new program called EPIC which is meant to meet the needs of high performance athletes in the Tricity area. I have included the article below for your information. You can apply right at your schools for entrance to the program.

Early group practices not only provide the opportunity to train in an intensely competitive environment, it also gives the swimmer the opportunity to finish school work earlier in the evening after workout and allow for better recovery from training with earlier possible sleep times. For a high performance swimmer this aspect of recovery is critical to ensure the week of training has good workouts across all practices. Over the past four years, Tanya Hunks, Shannon Garrett, Andre Kudaba, Michael Cai, Kathy Qu, Rudi Plesch, have all been members of this group who have gone on to swim National Level times and competed at the podium level in the finals at Senior Nationals, Age Group Nationals, and the Western Championships.

Please send me an email of interest at bottrill@hyack.com and I will notify you of the next steps to take in the process.  This group has a maximum size of 14 swimmers. Applicants will be ranked according to the scale above.

Regards:

Mark Bottrill
